Email used to communicate with learner inside the classroom:

Email inside the classroom suited this learner. Operating with a poor level of literacy the learner was wary of writing anything on paper but was willing to type. Using email was a new skill to the learner so repeated use inside the classroom allowed for confidence in the new skills to be developed.
Email also makes a good communication tool outside of the classroom. Not being in real-time it allows sender / receiver to access the communication at a time and place that suits.
Skype used to communicate with a learner outside of the classroom, resources available online.
Scenario: Learner working shifts so absent from class on regular but planned occasions.
As absences are planned and predictable this allowed for scheduled Skype sessions to firstly introduce the material and resources and secondly facilitate feedback or question and answer type sessions.
3.3 Review communication strategies used with digital literacy learners and identify ways to improve.
I mostly use email to communicate with learners. Messaging such as Skype has also been used. Maintaining a record of communications for later review by learner or tutor can be problematic. I hesitate to use other social media messaging systems as I don’t want to use my private accounts and having more than one account with most platforms infringes their terms and conditions. It is possible to set up a business profile and use that to communicate but often that runs into problems as the platforms want to monetize their business sections thereby hampering the use for educational purposes.
Having a dedicated virtual learning environment is best. It is safe, secure and reliable. Communications can be written, audio or video. This allows for keeping for evidence and review to revise the content.
